Description:

I stumbled upon the name for this podcasting platform, quite by chance. I was visiting the National Zoo in Pretoria, and this painting of a baobab tree really grabbed my attention. There's a mini market where artists sell their wares at the Zoo's entrance. The artist is known only as Bab'Grand. The tree is a symbol for a meeting place in African tradition. The idea for the podcast, Spudcaster, was born from my love of a simba chip ad when I was a kid. They were all chanting "I want to be a simba chippie" and then one potato rolls off the back of the truck and they zoom in on him saying "I osso wanted to be a simba tsipie" (this is the typical accent associated with coloured people). I loved that add. So baobulb is a combination of the spud and the symbolic tree.
