This episode is the second of ten episodes in our prison writing series. We’re featuring essays by a few of the men in the memoir classes Allison facilitates at Dade Correctional Institution (DCI). We’re airing stories by men and women who are incarcerated, or have been involved in the criminal justice system not just because they (the essays and the individuals) are brilliant and important, but also because we believe that stories lead to understanding. In this episode, Clifton Jones (2-Tall) tells his story of losing his mother while he’s been incarcerated and how that loss has inspired him to leave a legacy. Chris Wilson, author of The Master Plan is a businessman and social justice activist who is also on this show. Chris was raised in Washington, D.C., where he grew up under extremely difficult circumstances. At the age of 17, he was sentenced to juvenile life without the possibility of parole and served 16 years behind bars. While imprisoned, he earned his high school diploma, graduated from multiple vocational shops, earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Sociology and taught himself to speak and write in several languages. You will hear about Chris’s journey and how you can build your own master plan. Chris reads 2-Tall’s essay, since recording in prison is not allowed at DCI. For more Chris Wilson check out his The Stoop story and visit his website. This series of Writing Class Radio is hosted and produced by Allison Langer, Andrea Askowitz, and Marnino Toussaint.
