34: 5 Tips to Stay Organized

Description:

It may seem strange to devote a post to staying organized but when things are in order, your life is in order – and there is a peace to that. When you come home and your space is clean and uncluttered, I promise you will feel more inspired in other areas of your life. Your home should be where you go to recharge instead of being another thing to stress you out.

Now I love to clean and organize. They’re both seriously one of my favorite things to do. I mastered my organizing skills by living in a tiny studio in New York City and these five habits became essential for me to keep my home – and my life – physically clean and organized.

#1. Make your bed first thing in the morning.

By making your bed right away, you’ve already accomplished a task. Psychologically, you’re setting your day up for a win because you set the tone that you are getting things done that day. And just imagine how wonderful it will be to crawl back into a nicely-made bed that night!

#2. Load your dishwasher daily and run it every night. In the morning, empty it so it’s free to load again during the day.

These single habit has been the gamechanger. That dishwasher is there for you – so use it! Having it ready to collect your dirty dishes helps you keep your sink clean as the day goes on, and that night, let the dishwasher get to work. The next morning, empty it out so it’s ready to collect your dishes during another day.

When my kitchen’s a mess, I typically let the rest of my home go. So making my kitchen pristine, everything else feels cleaner. If you can keep your kitchen clean, you’re setting yourself up for success.

#3. Run a load of laundry every day.

Doing laundry is the worst. I get it. But I promise that it’s more time efficient to do a little laundry every day than to have clothes pile up waiting for you to tackle. Making your laundry loads smaller also helps you feel less overwhelmed when it comes to putting it away.

#4. Do a 15-minute wipedown session before bed.

Put a 15-minute timer on and see how much you can clean up right before bed. Whether you’re single, have roommates or a family, this can actually be kind of fun for everybody. Take the trash out, fluff pillows, put things away, whatever you can get done in that time period. Doing a little bit of maintenance each night helps make sure your house doesn’t look like a tornado hit it.

#5. When you get mail or bring any shopping bags into your house, go through them immediately.

This is big. You come inside with your hands filled with mail and bags. It’s easy to plop it down and do something else but stop and go through it really quickly! Throw away what you don’t need and move on with your day. Waiting to do these little tasks means mail and other piles of stuff just piles up … and piles up … and piles up.

Bonus Tip: Whether you’re looking to deep clean your house or just do a regular clean-up, start by taking a trash bag and walk around your entire house. Start throwing away the very obvious trash in plain sight. This task instantly takes me from not being in the mood for cleaning to suddenly wanting to clean. Energy starts moving and I physically start feeling better doing this little task.

Remember, the reason we do all this is because when your home is clean, it becomes a place for you to relax, be inspired and feel rejuvenated.
