This episode is the first to feature two interviews. We spoke to Lieutenant Colonel David Last of the Royal Military College and Dr. Sean Maloney, the Canadian Army’s historian for Afghanistan. While it was Lt. Col. Last who suggested we contact his friend Dr. Maloney, the two espouse very divergent perspectives on the topic of the show: the military and peacekeeping dichotomy or divide in Canada. We asked the two what they perceive peacekeeping to be, and whether Canadians’ self-perception as a “peacekeeping” people, as opposed to the United States, for example, is an invented tradition. Have we selectively memorialized figures, like Lester B. Pearson, policies and events that confirm the perception that Canada keeps the peace? Dr. Maloney offers a much more realist perspective than does Lt. Col. Last; he emphasizes the self-interested nature of Canada’s operations abroad, whether they are conducted under the label of peacekeeping or not.
