This episode features an interview with Queen's doctoral candidate Philippe Roseberry on post-communist transitions in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The focus of our conversation is democratization and transition in the region in the years directly after the fall of communism in the late 1980s and early 1990s, right up to current events. We compared transitions in Latin America, which were much more drawn out and predictable, with the very quick and surprising fall of communism and subsequent transitional period in Eastern Europe. Another topic that featured prominently in our discussion is the backtracking or democratic decline that several countries in the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe have experienced.
