Pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong are in their third week. People in Hong Kong took to the streets in September 2014 after China announced that a 1200 person nominating committee in Beijing would choose two to three electoral candidates for the general public to vote upon for the 2017 election of Hong Kong's Chief Executive. Many people in Hong Kong felt as though this decision made by China denied Hong Kong the democracy it had been promised under the one country two systems agreement. Protests have been largely student run and organized. But, these student protests are not just isolated to Hong Kong. For this episode, we spoke to Kris Yue, current Harvard Law student, and organizer of the Harvard Law Photo Rally to Show Solidarity with Students Standing up for Democracy in Hong Kong. Additionally, we spoke to Carol Wong, President of the Queen's Hong Kong Student Association, and organizer of the Support Democracy for Hong Kong protest at Queen's. We also feature an interview with Queen's history professor, Emily Hill. Professor Hill speaks about Chinese and Hong Kong history and how this can help us to understand the current Hong Kong protests.
