	Description:		In this episode, I lie down with one of my favorite humans, Lurleen. Lurleen is one of the only real friends I made during the time I lived in Portland, Oregon (Nov. 2008 - Nov. 2010) and was obsessed with Argentine tango. The other one is Mike. Mike and Lurleen are like the Boris and Natasha of the tango world, a beautifully mismatched dynamic duo. (They even dressed like Boris and Natasha once — it was magnificent to behold. I’ll try to track down that photo for you. [Update: Got it!]) Lurleen is about two feet taller than Mike, so I think, to this day, they’ve only danced together once, for the general amusement of all. We called it: Tuba Tango. It was like Vaudeville. Imagine dancing with a tuba to tuba music and you’ve got it about right. After dancing tango nearly every night of the week in 3 ½ inch heels for a year and a half, my right foot gave out. When I couldn’t dance anymore, and I didn’t want to go to the milongas to sit on the sidelines and listen to music, I learned the difference between real friends and activity friends. Mike and Lurleen turned out to be my only true friends in tango. Lurleen is a Vogue-colored candy shell with a creamy Saturday Night Live center, a giraffe in a gazelle's body. She will do most things for a laugh. She’s is a fashion model-turned-esthetician who had thyroid cancer in her late teens/early 20s. She still has the necklace-like scar, a smile across her skin. It serves as a daily reminder of how precious existence is, how crucial it is that we enjoy it, and how fortunate we are to still be able to laugh. This episode was recorded in Portland, Oregon at Lurleen's old, creaky, cozy apartment in Oct. 2017, on my cross-country horizontal does america tour, before she moved in with her boyfriend.
