What they were actually inspecting was none other than the original clock mechanism from the Duomo built in the 1800’s and which was in use up until the more “modern” clock mechanism was installed in the 1930’s. Since then it has been left to its own devices and gradually rusting away hidden from view and practically forgotten about. Not any longer – the campanari are now seriously thinking about renovating and restoring the clock and setting it back up in front of the public.
