Booby chick on a nest above a coral-reef lagoon in the Chagos Archipelago. Graham et al.3report their studies of how non-native rats affect the ecosystems of islands and adjacent coral reefs in the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. They find that rat-free islands have substantially more seabirds than do rat-infested islands. Moreover, nitrogen deposits from seabird excrement has a positive effect on nearby coral reefs through nutrient cycling, which generates nitrogen-rich algae that boost the fish population.Credit: Nick Graham
