I travelled to Paoli, Indiana to check out an 8 acre Permaculture farm and nursery by the name of Brambleberry Farms.
Brambleberry is a family operation owned and operated by Darren and Espri Bender-Beauregard. On this farm they have an diverse setting including a proper food forest, two market gardens, a silvopasture orchard that is developing, an off site grass fed beef operation (in partnership with another farm) and of course their perennial nursery.
Sound like a lot for two people to manage? It is, and that is why Darren and Espri are looking for someone who is interested in an incubator farm (or intern if you prefer) position, that includes housing, land to work to of your own end and lots of education and hands on experience in exchange for work sharing.
On top of discussing all of that, we also got to talk about the fact that the Bender-Beauregards designed and built their own straw bale home on the property. I have been looking forward to seeing a modern straw bale home and I was not disappointed in this one. A cozy home of about 1000 square feet of surface, with a partial loft; the home was as attractive as it was livable and had all the amenities you would want in a modern home.
At any rate listen to us talk about the details of their home and farm on this weeks edition of the DIY Food Supply Podcast.
