Episode Description: In this talk, David Hinton takes us on a journey into Chan’s Daoist origin utilizing our breath as a means of exploring China’s ancient past. David asks us, “To simply and exhaustively, be alone with the universe.” As we explore the roots of our breath, David explores the often-overlooked role Daoism played in shaping Chan practice in China. Through the analysis of Chinese ideograms, we discover how Daoist philosophy shaped the Chinese language and how that relationship shaped Buddhism in China.
