YESTERDAY’S NEWS --
Tales of classic scandals, scoundrels and scourges told from historic newspapers in the golden age of yellow journalism...
Unveiling The Scandalous Hannah Elias
Episode 261 begins with a prominent citizen of New York City being gunned down on the street in a case of mistaken identity. But finding the real reason behind the killing, officials uncover a questionable liaison between another prominent citizen and a woman who is living in comfortable circumstances that belie her humble origins. Then things get messy.
This story has a strong racial element to it. Whenever possible, I have tempered the rough language that was common in the day, except in direct quotes or when it is relevant to the narrative. In those cases, I read it as published.
Culled from the historic pages of the New York World and other newspapers of the era.
