History of Civilian Full Auto Firearms Ownership in the US:
- 1934 (6 months after prohibition ended) National Firearms Act
- Registry of all full auto weapons, suppressors, SBSs and SBRs
- $200 Transfer tax
- After this it was like getting a suppressor now
- 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act (Hughes Amendment)
- Closed the registry to new machine guns
- Current status
- Legal to own with CLEO signature or trust in many states
- Very expensive: $15k to $20k per gun, and supply is fixed
- Interestingly, prices don’t seem to have jumped commensurate with the huge surge in gun sales in the last few years
- In 1984 Gary Fadden defended his life with a machine gun. He was involved in a road rage incident, and after being chased for a number of miles, shot at, and finally cornered, he ended up shooting a man with his full auto Ruger AC556
The News:
NSSF is offering $50,000 in grants to the Boy Scouts of America for their shooting programs. I'm an Eagle Scout, and I spent almost every summer at scout camp when I was growing up. At every camp, every year, the rifle range was always full with a line. It's one of the most popular things to do at scout camp, so seeing that the NSSF is stepping up to help this grow is a great thing!
A man was robbed at gunpoint, then told to drive to a bank with his attacker in the car. The victim was able to draw his own pistol (while presumably already being held at gunpoint) and shoot and kill his attacker. I don't know how much truth there is to it, but I've been told on many occasions that any time an attacker is trying to move you to another location, or begins rounding people up, that's when it's time to fight.
A San Diego man responded to a noise at 4AM in his home. He sees a window broken out of his kitchen so he retrieves his handgun, and confronts the bad guy in his backyard and holds him at gunpoint until the police arrive. The homeowner apparently sleeps in the nude, and when he retrieved his handgun, he didn't bother putting on any clothes. I imagine the police officer that arrived to see him holding the bad guy at gunpoint while stark naked had a story to tell his buddies at shift change...
Bob Owens over at BearingArms.com sheds some light on the rumor of the Pentagon will be destroying $1B worth of small arms ammo. The conspiracy theorist sites were ablaze this past week saying that the government was buying up billions in ammo, then destroying it just to keep it out of civilian hands. That isn't the case, turns out most of the stuff that will be destroyed will be things like Stinger missiles that can't be used in training, and are reaching the end of their shelf life.
It's been confirmed that Everytown paid to bring in the 100 protesters that demonstrated in Indianapolis. 75,000 gun lovers paid their own way, but they had t pay for the 100 they had to show up. Yeah, about that 90% number...
Plug of the Week:
This week we plugged Episide 59 of Ballistic Radio. The host John Johnston interviews Scott Warren of Warren Tactical in this episode. They talk about Warren's history, and then go into some really interesting stuff about his time on the FBI Hostage Rescue Team. It's a good episode, you should go listen to it.
Tip of the Week:
Put some sunblock in your range bag right now. Don't go looking for it before your next range trip, just buy some, and put it in your bag so it's there when you need it. I'm looking awfully lobster-ish after the Sir Walter USPSA match on Saturday...
