Ever run from something? Maybe it was a responsibility that became too burdensome. Maybe it was a relationship that seemed impossible. Maybe it was a calling that felt overwhelming.
Ever start something and quit? Chances are you have. You make a commitment and then bail. You decide to go back to school but never fill out the application. You tell a friend you’ll help, but then never call.
Most of us are on the run from something. We have all wanted to escape the discomfort that comes with circumstances too much to take. We run from our guilt. We run from our shame. We run from a marriage. We run from a situation in which we might fail.
Running isn’t such a bad thing; depending on the motives you have for going on the run. Are you running from something or to something? Are you running away from sin or running from obedience?Jonah is a prophet who goes on the run for all the wrong reasons and it gets him into a whole lot of trouble. God speaks and he runs. God calls him in a certain direction and he sets the GPS the opposite way. Through this short story in the Old Testament we’ll learn that we have a thing or two in common with Jonah. Most importantly, we will continue to discover a God who pursues us as we run. |
