This past Sunday we drank from an open fire hydrant for about 45 minutes as we talked about the mission and vision of our church as we head into 2010. If you weren’t able to make it then I want to encourage you to listen to that message here or get a CD because we covered some incredibly important material as it relates to who God has called us to be and what He has commissioned us to do as a church.
We covered the idea that our mission has already been decided for us by the One True Pastor of this church, Jesus Christ, with His words in Matthew 28. The way we've chosen to phrase this Great Commission idea is:
To engage the disengaged with the love of God, introduce them to Jesus, and help facilitate their growth to full maturity.
This is written in verb form to communicate that it requires action on our part. This statement is what drives our plans, priorities, and strategy.
The vision is closely connected to the mission but is clearly different in nature. We could say that a vision is: a mental image of what could be, fueled by what should be. The vision statement that has been prayed over and developed by our elders is:
A crossroad for life beyond imagination, which is essentially a rephrasing of Jesus' words to us in John 10:10 to give us life to the fullest. It is a picture of a mosaic of people from different backgrounds, races, languages, generations, and preferences coming together to be the Church to a watching world. There are so many things that have the potential to divide and separate us, but the thing that has the power to unite and empower us actually isn't a thing at all ... it's a person, Jesus Christ.
As we forge ahead into a new decade, let's continue to think big, but act small. Let's be motivated by our mission and impassioned by our vision to see lives changed, our community impacted, and the world influenced for the Kingdom of God.
We all were witness to this in action on Christmas Eve when together, as a church, we sacrificially gave $75,716.71 for our year-end offering, which will go to support our partnership with Brookside Community Church. Together, along with Northview Christian Life Church in Carmel (and hopefully a few other churches), we want to equip, support, and partner with this church that is impacting this inner city neighborhood in Indianapolis in significant ways. We will continue to keep you updated and informed on how you can pray for and serve in this ministry. I'm so humbled by your servant hearts and blessed to serve alongside you.
