Today we want to help you get the most from your cooler. Kris and I recently purchased a new cooler for our adventures. We were committed to NOT buying ice each day. These tips helped.

How did we do it? We followed the directions, and added a few tricks of our own.

Get The Most From Your Cooler

  • Pre-chill  your cooler’s content in your refrigerator.
  • Pre-chill the cooler with a tray or two of ice and some cold water.
  • Use block ice when possible.
  • Put ice towards the top when using cubes.
  • Fill that cooler. Dead space is warming space. Fill the empty space with frozen ice jugs or water bottles.
  • Keep the cooler out of direct sunlight.
  • If you have to leave it in the back if your car, cover it with a blanket or sleeping bag. You may want to place one under it also.
  • Get what you need and get that lid closed.
  • Use a  separate cooler for beverages.
  • Protect your meat and perishables. Make sure they’re sealed up so nothing leaks in or out.

We looked at several medium sized coolers before we landed on the one that came home with us. Our final choice was a 70 quart 5 day cooler, the Coleman Extreme 5. It had great online  reviews, and it was on clearance at our local Shopko.

Is Tom And Kris Camping Back To Stay?

We’re still nailing down the schedule, but we are here to stay. The show will most likely publish every other week for now. Don will be here, but not on every episode. It just doesn’t fit into all of our schedules, but he will be on many of them.

We also have a few new plans for future episodes. The camping bug bit our family when our three kids were little. Now that they’re grown, Don’s sisters may show up from time to time and share their stories.

Finally, we’ll give you an update on what Kris and I have been up to.
