rustic pickup and camper

No, This isn’t our old Ford and camper.

This was an important weekend for us. It was the first real camping trip in our recently purchased camper.  In a campground close to home, we could see what our 22 year old slide-in camper was made of. We even had a serious thunderstorm Saturday, the second night. The camper held up well. High and dry, Kris and I listened to the lightning and thunder from the cab-over bed.

Goals of The Shakedown Cruise

  • Find any camper issues in need of repair.
  • Catch up on a little reading.
  • See what a few others were using for camping.
  • Plan a podcast episode or two.
  • Just have fun camping again.

Mission accomplished. We had a great time, the camper served us well and we saw some cool stuff.

Glamping

Otherwise known as glamour camping, glamping is catching on as a trend. According to Glamping.com, glamping pairs destinations with the intimacy of camping and the world of luxury travel.

Choices include tents with luxurious beds, Yurts with room service and 5 star hotel service in an Airstream. No cooking, cleaning or making the bed. Kris has more details on this new type of lodging.

The Tax Money

Even buying new, RVing doesn’t have to be expensive. Many of the new motor homes are approaching $150,000 or more. Most average around 8.5% sales tax and license fees. That’s $12,750. Do you know how many RV options exist for just the taxes due on one of these things?

Catered Camping

This article from OutsideOnLine.com describes how it works. You can even order your meals from a smartphone app. You place your order and your meals arrive at your home, boxed and ready for your camping or backpacking trip. Take some time and check out the prices and menu items available from FiresideProvisions.com.

I’m especially impressed with their backpacker’s provisions.  Lighter in weight and denser in calories, combined with great menu options.

Vintage Airstream

Kris spotted an older Airstream trailer in the campground. I had to go check out her find. It turned out to be 1962 Airstream International. In need of restoration, it was the maiden voyage for the old silver bullet. Even in it’s unrestored condition, it was a work of art.
