Budget Truck Campers

The Cowboy, By Capri. They also build 2 larger models with the traditional bunk over the cab.

Let’s get down to truck camper basics here. You’re looking for a few simple things.

  • A light camper that that doesn’t overload a half ton pickup.
  • Basic amenities. A sink, stove and ice box. A dinette or sofa that folds into a bed.
  • A few options like air conditioning, a corner kitchen and a 3 way refrigerator.
  • A price that’s affordable.
  • Better fuel mileage than traditional truck campers.

Two New Budget Pickup Campers That Just May Work

Kris and I were visiting our almost local pickup camper dealer a few weeks ago. I say almost because it’s about 55 miles way, but he’s the closest new camper dealer to our small town. A big thank you to Jeff Rollins, owner of J and J RV in Eau Claire WI for spending some time talking about truck campers, and RVs in general. Our focus was budget pickup campers and popup camp trailers. Check out their website at jandjrv.com.

As you read this, keep in mind that we barely had a website up at this point. Not a single podcast episode was published yet, but when Jeff heard what Kris and I were working on he was glad to talk with us. He was also excited about a new pickup camper model, soon to be on his lot.

The camper Jeff was excited about was the new Travel Lite Rayzr. The Rayzr is a light weight camper with a twist. No overhang or cab-over bed. In fact, the front sweeps slightly back from the top of the pickup cab to the roof line. A true solid wall option for anyone looking for a camper that’s easy on the pocket book. This could be the ultimate budget pickup camper. Built in Indiana, we’re hoping one makes its way to J and J soon.

You can check out more details on their website, travellitecampers.com. Scroll to the bottom of the page for pictures.

The other option we found on line was from Capri Campers in Texas. I actually heard about Capri’s Cowboy camper from a bronco rider and part time trucker. Capri only builds three models. The Cowboy is about as basic as you can get, but you certainly can option it up. Check them out at Capricampers.com.

Another big advantage of these models is they both leave you with more capacity to tow a boat, horse trailer or whatever else you want to haul. Most half ton trucks could haul one of these campers and a decent trailer without overloading the truck. That’s important. That’s BIG.

Classic or Griswold?

Classic Camper, class BThis will be a new segment to the podcast. Every week we will offer a picture of an RV. It may be a pickup camper, travel trailer or motor home, but it’ll be a little out of the ordinary. You get to decide if it looks like a classic, or that RV parked in front of the Griswold house in the movie Christmas Vacation.

This week’s subject is this 90s looking class B motor home. Don’t get us wrong. It has some redeeming values, but is it classic?

Glamping Destination of the week

Another regular segment, this week’s glamping segment takes us to West Yellowstone, WY and Yellowstone Under Canvas. Kris will bring you full details on the luxury tents and guided activities this location has to offer.

Camping and Kids

We also talk about an article from the U.K. that discusses the positive affects of camping and “caravanning” on kids. You can read the entire article at  Campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk to get all the details.
