Description:

There’s an old saying in the business world. It’s what many businesses consider a key to success. That saying is “a foot wide, and a mile deep.” The point is to do only a few things, and do them well. Such is the case with Capri Campers.

Capri Retreat CamperA Conversation With Pete D’Acosta of Capri Campers

Three things really intrigued me when Kris and I covered the Capri Cowboy camper in a previous episode.

  1. Capri Campers only builds 3 models of slide-in pickup campers. That’s it, 3.
  2. You can order only what you desire and can afford. Cut back or add on features as your needs and budget allow.
  3. Capri Campers, located about 90 miles southwest of Dallas TX, built it’s name by serving the rodeo cowboy market. Although they fill many other niches, the heart of Capri is still following the rodeo cowboy and building the camper they need.

I reached out to Capri and was able to catch up with Pete D’Acosta for a conversation about his company. Pete is excited about the future of Capri Campers, and plans on staying a foot wide and a mile deep with what the company builds, pickup campers.

You will notice a quite a few unique things about their campers.

  • Their gear driven camper jacks work great with a cordless power drill, saving you money.
  • Hearing about the tie-down system is a slap-your-forehead moment. Why didn’t anyone else think of that? Again, it saves money.
  • They have a wide price range, but all are quite affordable. They start out around the $4,000 range and top out at around $16,000.
  • They’re on the lighter side of the weight scale. Depending on what you’re towing behind the pickup, a half ton truck may be all you need.
  • You have the ability to leave room for more storage. Want a place to store that saddle? No problem.
  • Following the link to the Capri Community, rodeo fans will recognize quite a few names of contenders and champions using the campers.

Cowboy

Capri Cowboy CamperThis was the first Capri that caught my eye. Minimalist by design, it provides basic needs. Love the compact size, but want some options? No problem. Loosing the overhang saves weight, improves aerodynamics and fuel economy and it keeps the price down.

Maverick

capri mavrickThe maverick is the mid-range. A 45″ cab-over bunk and 6′ of standing height make the Maverick a little more comfortable. Again, a full list of options and upgrades are available. It can sleep up to 4, depending on how you have it built.

Retreat

The Retreat (pictured top) is the largest model. It feaures a 55″ cab-over bunk and a 6’4″ stand-up height.  This one has the longest list of features and upgrades.

All 3 of these campers give you a large variety of color options and interior choices. Kris enjoyed all of the different wood choices for the interior. I love the fact that you only pay for what you need.

My Thoughts On A Future Model

Now this is just Tom, thinking out loud. I think there’s another niche that hasn’t been filled. What about a slide-in pickup camper with full features, but no overhang? Something like the Capri Cowboy, but with 6′ of standing height and a shower. Light weight and aerodynamic and affordable. I even have floor plans, floating around in my head.

A big thanks to Pete for taking the time to talk with us. I have no doubt Capri Campers has a bright future ahead of them.
