Description:

Dangerous formaldehyde in your RVWho doesn’t remember Shasta travel trailers? Those cute little trailers have a style of their own. And they had wings. Small but prominent silver wings at each rear corner. Originally building the trailers for military housing, Shasta has changed ownership several times over the years.

Now owned by Forest River RV, Shasta makes a fairly wide product line, but the little 16 footer with that vintage look is still around. Old fashion styling, retro colors and those silver wings make these things stand out. Kris and I have to ask if these things might hold up a little better than most when it comes to resale.

Formaldehyde Fumes In Your RV

Kris and I followed the link between the Shasta trailers of the past being used for military housing and the FEMA trailers of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. That lead us to the issue of formaldehyde fumes in your RV. Used in plywood, particle board and adhesives throughout most RVs, we feel it is something you need to be aware of.

In this episode, we will give you two methods used to deal with the formaldehyde fumes in your RV. Both are quite simple.

  1. The first method is to cook it out. Close up your RV with the furnace on high. Let it sit this way for at least 12 hours. Then air it out completely.
  2. Use household cleaning ammonia to neutralize the formaldehyde fumes. Again, air it out completely.

Recvehicle.com has a great article on how to do either of these methods. Take a look. It’s an inexpensive and easy process. Be sure that you open every door, cupboard and inside compartment when you perform either process.

Steve McQueen’s $98,000 RV

I’ve always been fascinated with pickup campers. The no overhang versions seem to draw me in the most. Part of the draw is the reality of the aerodynamic drag that overhead bunk causes. Part of the draw is the simplicity of the unit, and the affordability. I’ve even toyed with building my own custom 10 footer. The floor plan is in my head.

As it turns out, Steve McQueen had the same opinion. His 52 Chevy truck and custom camper went on the auction block earlier in the year. Fetching a little over $98,000, someone picked up a great piece of Americana, Hollywood and Billy Graham history, all in one package. It’s an interesting story. You can read more at Foxnews.com. Check out the spartan interior of both the truck and camper.

Bad RV Kitchen Hacks

Kris and I had to laugh over a few of the RV kitchen “hacks” we’ve found on line. The photos weren’t taken in an RV. The advice was just plain bad. In one article they even suggested hanging your sharp carving knives from a magnet on your camper’s wall. Another suggests hanging pots and pans from pegboard hooks.

Kris and I will be bringing you more and better RV hacks in the future. An RV hack shouldn’t involve opening your camper door and finding sharp knives stick into the floor of the unit.

Glamping Destination of the Week

Kris brings us Singletree Gun and Plough in Danbury NC as this episode’s glamping destination. Adjacent to Hanging Rock State Park, Singletree offers activities from hunting, fly fishing, kayaking and ziplining. Follow the link for more details.

Some Great Vintage Pictures

Thanks to Flickr and dwstucke for the use of the vintage Shasta image. Take some time to look at his great collection of vintage images. The picture was used under Creative Commons licensing.
