  • Understand sleeping bag temperature ratings.
  • Keep something between you and the ground.
  • Use throw blankets, jackets or whatever you have to beef up the insulation.
  • Hot Hands hand and body warmers are cheap and safe. Think twice about a gas heater in a tent.
  • Air mattresses can freeze you out.

REI has a couple of great articles for choosing the right sleeping bag. This article is for camping, but it contains a link to backpacking bags. Check out Sleeping Bags for Camping: How To Chose for more.

Two RVs Are Better Than One

Wayne and Catherine live in Ontario, Ca. They love camping with family and exploring areas close to home and across the continent. We had a chance to meet when they came through Rice Lake, Wisconsin about 3 years ago on a long road trip.

Two RVs are better than oneThey had a unique setup. Their Mitsubishi van is 4WD, complete with low range. To make it more unique it’s diesel powered and right hand drive. Being creative people, they built their own teardrop inspired camp trailer. Needless to say, I loved what I saw.

Being friends on Facebook, I couldn’t help but notice they were traveling in a Winnebago class A motor home. A couple of emails later I knew the full story.

  1. The big class A is great for traveling close to home, but that 454 loves fuel.
  2. The van/teardrop combo gets high teens in the fuel economy department making it perfect for longer road trips.
  3. Using both at the same time allows them to camp with kids and grand kids.

If you have the place to park them, what a great alternative! Another thing Wayne added is the possibility of traveling with friends on longer trips and splitting the fuel costs with the motor home.
