One legged campers

Ryan’s home built overland camper and rooftop tent. The tent is soon to be remounted on the roof of the trailer.

It’s a descriptive term I’ve coined for the camper whose spouse is not a camping fan. I spent most of the 90s working as a car salesman. A husband or wife shopping alone was commonly called a one-legged shopper. They rarely could make a decision without their spouse. A married person camping alone must be a one-legged camper. It totally makes sense, right? This brings a few twists to the activity.

  • Who do you camp with?
  • How often do you go?
  • How much is your camping budget?
  • Is there a happy medium that would get both of you out there?
  • Do you really have to do everything together?

What’s a jelly bean camper?

You may own one of these. Kris and I are sure fans. Trailers like the R-Pod or Jayco’s Humming Bird trailers are great examples. They’re bigger than a tear drop trailer, but shaped more like a jelly bean. Unlike the smaller teardrop campers, these trailers generally provide a fully self contained option. They’re also quite reasonably priced. They’re also easier to tow.

I saw one of these on the road this week. In fact, I’ve seen a few of them. In doing a little searching on line I found a great blog post titled 27 Truths About Your First RV. We all thought this article brought up some great points to ponder. We’ll toss them around and have some fun with them.
