When camping doesn't look like the pictures

A sneak preview of the camper that’s calling our name.

You’re all set up in your campground, tucked in for the night in your RV or tent. The kids have fallen asleep so you decide to do a little cruising on Pinterest or Instagram. And oh, those images. Why doesn’t our camping look like their camping?

  • Nothing is out of place. No piles of overnight bags, backpacks or coats and jackets stacked on the dinette.
  • The meals were great, but just didn’t have the presentation.
  • During the day, the beds or bunks aren’t neatly made, and free of clutter.
  • Most of those “99 great RV storage hacks” didn’t even survive the trip.

Camping Doesn’t Look Like The Pictures. It Shouldn’t.

We remember the scheme of things when the kids were little. We’d head out in the popup trailer, most of our gear in the car. RV’s never have enough storage for 5 people, even for the weekend trips. Once camp was set up, duffel bags and such spent the days on the bunk, and the nights on the dinette seats.

In the bigger trailer, I’d move what we didn’t need first thing in the morning, back out to the car or van. The kids could have breakfast in their PJs, and we could get the bags back in later. It wasn’t a mess, but it sure wasn’t like the social media pictures.

Tent or Hammock?

We’ve had tents, popups and travel trailers. The only hammocks we’ve had have been the kind that come with a frame. Designed for the back yard, the weather would usually get to them in 2 or 3 years.

Camping hammocks are another story. Would you be willing to give up your tent and hang from the trees? There seems to be a surge in camp hammocks lately, but we don’t see them in our future.

The True Cost Of Camping

We all have dreams of the best camping gear or that dream RV. But the truth is that camping can fit any budget. We found an interesting CNBC article on the subject, and we’ll share some of the highlights.
