Here's the first of my 'filling in the missing episodes' - and many thanks to those who continue to subscribe and support the show, I really appreciate it!
This is an edited version of a presentation done at The Australian Skeptics convention held in Melbourne, in 2006. It was the first Australian skeptical convention I'd ever attended, and it really made an impact upon me, because I'd heard of people talking about paranormal claims and science education before - but never about the science behind make-up claims.
The presentation is by Rosemary Nixon, and it is thanks to her and Richard Saunders of the Skeptic Zone podcast that I'm able to play this for you. I hope to speak to her again about pseudoscience and dermatology in the near future.
You'll hear references to the slides and advertisements used in this presentation and I'll be seeing about putting some of those up on the Token Skeptic podcast. So if you have difficulty imagining some of the standard adverts that are used by companies that say how pomegranate and tomato extract is meant to benefit your skin, you can refer to examples on my site at www.tokenskeptic.org.
Thanks again to the listeners and you'll be getting another two episodes out this week, including one for 'You Only Like Me Because I'm Good In Blog' Day - April 22nd. Head to the Shethought.com website, a place where anyone can contribute entries and essays, to learn more about how bloggers are dedicating a day to talking about maintaining and sustaining their writing online.
So - here's Rosemary Nixon, Senior Fellow at the Department of Medicine at St Vincent's Hospital, at the University of Melbourne - with her presentation on "MythBusting: A Dermatologist's Approach to Cosmetic Advertising".
The official site for Token Skeptic is at www.tokenskeptic.org.
