Green Bay dropped its fourth straight game on Sunday, falling 16-3 to Minnesota in the regular-season finale. But the outcome was largely irrelevant for the Packers, as they already had their playoff seeding locked up. That led to coach Matt LaFleur holding out many of the team’s best players, trying to avoid a repeat of last year’s final game when Christian Watson went down with a torn ACL. This time, Watson, along with Jordan Love, Romeo Doubs, Josh Jacobs, Xavier McKinney, Edgerrin Cooper and others watched from the sideline. That left quarterback Clayton Tune and a whole of bunch of backups and recent signees to face off against the Vikings.
It didn’t go well, especially on offense, where Green Bay didn’t score until the final play of the game, had the fewest team passing yards (-7) in an NFL game since 1998 and finished with just 121 total yards. Playing behind a makeshift line and facing one of the more aggressive defenses in the NFL, Tune completed just 6 of 11 passes for 34 yards and was sacked four times.
While the outcome of the game got some media attention afterwards, the focus quickly shifted to the playoffs, where the Packers will face NFC North rival Chicago next Saturday night in a wild-card game at Soldier Field. It will be the third meeting between the two teams this year, with Green Bay getting a late interception to seal the win at Lambeau Field in early December and the Bears shocking the Packers by overcoming a late 10-point lead for the win two weeks later.
It will also be the third time the teams have matched up in the postseason and first since 2010. That’s when Green Bay went into Chicago for the NFC Championship game and came away 21-14 winners on their way to a Super Bowl XLV title.
Kickoff on Saturday is set for 7 p.m. and will be televised on Prime Video. |
