Up against the defending National Champions, the No. 13 UW-La Crosse football team fell 35-27 on Saturday.
North Central came in the consensus No. 1 ranked team. It had been to five consecutive Division III national championships — winning three, including two of the past three.
The final score appears closer than the game was, but not many expected the Eagles (8-3) to even be this close.
What may have decided the game was a pick six with 32 seconds to go in the first half. Rahmareon Roby intercepted UW-L’s Kyle Haas and returned it 59 yards for the score. That put the Cardinals (12-0) up 28-7 at halftime.
UW-L pulled within 28-14 deep into the third quarter. It got within two scores — 35-21 — again late in the fourth but couldn’t get any closer than that until the final play of the game.
The Eagles scored on a 26-yard touchdown to end the game, pulling within eight when Marko Rajovic hauled in his fourth TD.
This was UW-L’s school record fifth consecutive NCAA playoff appearance, and three of those now have been ended by North Central.
Rajkovic’s four touchdown catches ties him for third-most in a playoff game in NCAA Division III history. It’s also tied for second in single-game UW-L history.
UW-L junior quarterback Haas finished 34-for-48 for 308 yards with those four TDs and two interceptions. The completions and attempts are a UW-L playoff record. His four TD passes are third-most in a postseason game.
