Description:

What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself. — Abraham Maslow

I was sitting in an honors ceremony listening to the Governor General of The Bahamas address a group of clueless high school graduates. He didn’t speak very long, but he encouraged us to be humble about our knowledge. He said that there are two kinds of people in the world: Those that don’t know and those that don’t know that they don’t know.

I was smart when he told me that and I thought he was just a guy who didn’t know. It’s been ten years and I’ve come to the realization that when I heard him speak I didn’t know that I didn’t know. Who knows what I’ll think of my present self in another 10 years.

Self-awareness is a process. A process that doesn’t occur naturally and if you want to grow as a swimmer then you will have to work at it. It won’t be fun at the beginning, but it will become more rewarding the more you probe into your mind.

Yes it is uncomfortable and yes it will take time, but should you choose not to pursue self-awareness you will be like the 100lb, 10-year old dog that still thinks she is a puppy.

If you still have no idea what I’m talking about it will make sense once you listen to this week’s podcast about a skinny little 12-year old boy transforming into a world heavyweight champion.
