Dear Sprocket Podcast,
I enjoyed the discussion on bike commuting in EP 571!
Like Guthrie, I too am interested if anyone is making bike maps with routes that optimized for shade. One easy upgrade that will make many city bike maps more usable is to make the maps available as a geospatial PDF files. This type of file, on your phone, allows you to see your location on the bike map using only the phone’s GPS signal, no internet connection/data plan required.

My city, Daytona Beach, has no official bike map so I made one of my own and published it as a free geospatial PDF file that works with the Avenza Maps App.

More info on my map here: https://bicycledaytona.myportfolio.com I’m curious if any other Sprocket Podcast listeners live in places with no official bike map and have made their own maps.

Tail winds!

The Tour de tulips Orange city, Iowa!

It was their first annual Tour De Tulips – They promise even better things for next year. Iowa is great to visit. Maybe we’ll see some of you there next May.

Just did a bike ride last weekend in Iowa! It was great. I wrote the following text (review) and sent it to the local newspaper who are publishing my words this Thursday.

This past Friday evening, the wife and I checked into our room in Sioux  Center, Iowa. That room was six hours and 45 minutes from our home in The Ozarks.

Yep, that’s correct. We drove almost 7 hours, from Springfield, MO, to stay in a town that we never heard of a month ago. We wanted to stay in Orange City,  (which we also never heard of more than a month earlier) but there were no vacancies. Everything was booked due to Orange City’s Tulip Festival.

That’s OK, in Sioux Center we rode our bicycles almost two miles through very pleasant residential streets to a little restaurant for a burger and a steak. We had the nicest server, and some great beer from Iowa. That was a good town to overnight in.
