Criminalising controlling behaviour

Category: News & Politics
Duration: 00:17:51
Publish Date: 2020-12-06 17:00:00
Description: An overwhelming majority of women murdered by their partners in Australia are subject beforehand to a pattern of behaviour called coercive control. New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and Victoria are all currently looking at ways to criminalise it. But while advocates say it could prevent physical abuse, others argue it will be hard to get convictions, and could even misfire. So how do coercive control laws work? And do they make a difference for victims and survivors of domestic violence? Featured: Nicole Lee, abuse victim-survivor and anti-family violence activist Jess Hill, journalist and author, 'See What You Made Me Do: Power, Control and Domestic Abuse'
