On Friday news broke he'd been handed a death sentence. The Government has been reluctant to link his case to the deeply fractured diplomatic relationship between the two countries, but the timing has given rise to speculation that the case is being used as a tool by the Chinese Government. So is China trying to send Australia a message, and what could it be?
