Why US life expectancy is falling

Category: News & Politics
Duration: 00:15:20
Publish Date: 2019-03-18 12:00:00
Description: For the first time since World War One, US life expectancy is falling. It's partly to do with an increase in suicides, and partly to do with a spike in deaths caused by opioid overdoses. It's a crisis that’s been rolling for 20 years now, but it’s found new urgency as more and more addicts make the switch to fentanyl, which is far stronger and more dangerous. Today's episode traces the origins of the problem, back to the aggressive marketing tactics that drug companies pioneered in the 1990s. Featured: Conor Duffy, North America Correspondent for the ABC
