Those tensions really boiled over on the weekend at the APEC summit in Papua New Guinea. But why now, when China has been building up its power in the region for so long? The answer might have something to do with a fiery speech at the summit from US President Mike Pence, which included a promise to invest in a naval base on Manus Island. So is this the start of the US pushing back against Chinese influence on Australia's doorstep? Or is it too little, too late?
