Yesterday David Harold Eastman's conviction for the 1989 murder of senior Canberra police officer Colin Winchester was overturned after a retrial.
Eastman had always maintained his innocence, and at his original trial he suggested members of the mafia were to blame instead.
Initially, police themselves believed there had been mafia involvement, but over the course of their investigation they dropped that line of inquiry.
So did the cops make a mistake?
And did the mafia kill Colin Winchester?
Today on The Signal we speak with former editor of The Canberra Times Jack Waterford, who covered the Eastman trial in the 90s and was never convinced the conviction was fair.
We also chat to ABC reporter Connie Agius, who has been reporting on the mafia in Italy and Australia for years. |
