SHOW NOTES
Introducing Rashelle Porter!
What a fascinating set of interviews I have had out of Monroe City R-1 High School so far. Between my interview with Nathan Mehrer (episode #286) and this episode featuring Rashelle Porter, both are making things to help other people with some physical disabilities.
Rashelle is making orthotics with magnets inside of them to help people with foot pain. This is an idea she has had since she was twelve years of age, based on her dad having pain in his feet.
Rashelle has followed a path that has led her to the point that she now has a mentor, a manufacturer, business cards, a finished product and a future of manufacturing her own products. Her path is truly something the rest of us could follow.
Lesson #1 - Don't Give Up
Rashelle had an idea, and even at a young age she knew she wanted to make this product. She did not give up on the idea, and she waited until the opportunity was there for her to do this.
Lesson #2 - Be Around Like Minded People
Rashelle found herself in FFA where a supervised agricultural experience is required. She naturally found her way into an organization that promotes entrepreneurship.
Lesson #3 - "When The Student Is Ready, The Teacher Will Appear"
As she progressed through FFA she found a class at a community college for young entrepreneurs and enrolled. Through the class she was able to connect with experts in the field, develop a mentor relationship and begin manufacturing her products. The saying goes, "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear" as they did for Rashelle when there as an announcement on the loud speaker at her high school.

Support FFA
Donate to FFA - One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward.
REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:
Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
"Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive."
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
