Description:    SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS:  I have had a lot of great guests on this show.....a lot!  Today's guest fits the mold of what I am hoping to help listeners achieve better than any other guest I have had on.  And, this is the first time that I have featured a father on a Friday episode followed by his son on a Monday episode. I interviewed Jim's son, Josh Underhill, a few weeks back and he mentioned that his dad ran a business to support his farming.  I knew right then that I wanted to interview Jim as well. Jim Underhill has been farming since 1980, initially in partnership with his father, who just passed away last August.  In 1985 Jim saw the need for some soil work on his farm in the name of soil conversation.  He purchased a bulldozer to do the work, and he found a second passion. Soon Jim was being asked by neighbors if they could hire him for the same work.  Underhill Construction was born, and soon Jim had two agricultural businesses.  Fast forward to today, and Jim has a lot more equipment than when he started, he is employing multiple people in his business and he has built a great reputation. I hope you enjoy getting to hear Jim's passion for farming, passion for soil conservation and how his journey unfolded. ADVICE FROM JIM: TIMELY: Learn to be timely with your work.  Finish when your customers are expecting you to finish. START SMALL: Don't borrow yourself into a situation that you cannot possibly succeed.  Bootstrap and build your business as you go. GOOD PEOPLE: Hire good people. Do not look just for the best at the job.  Look for the best and the job that you will get along with well. EARLY: If you incur debt, pay it off early.  Don't let it become an anchor around your neck. BEST BUSINESS ADVICE JIM HAS RECEIVED: EMERGENCY FUND: Jim's dad told him never to borrow too much and to save for big breakdowns or disasters.  This way an emergency will not knock you out of business. PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS JIM SUCCEED: LISTS: Jim gets up every morning and makes two lists: First he makes a list of gratitude.  Every morning he writes down what he is grateful for.  Next he makes a "to do" list.  This helps Jim have a great day and accomplish his goals.
