Description:    SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS:  If you are one of our listeners that is looking for a way to farm, and just cannot imagine how this will ever happen I have got an opportunity for you that probably will never come along again. A few days ago I ran across a post on Facebook from Polyface Farms about a lady named Norma DeCamp Burns who owns and is giving away her farm, Bluebird Hill Farm.  Norma purchased her farm in in 1998 with her husband, and he passed away in 2005.  She has continued farming it by herself, but the time has come for her to reduce her workload. Most people in this position would sell their farm and realize the equity they had built up over the past 20 years.  However, Norma has a different idea.  Norma has placed Bluebird Hill Farm in an agricultural conservation easement and gone through the trouble to legally give away her farm to an aspiring couple whose dream it is to have this lifestyle.  Norma has created a selection committee that will choose the recipient from the 20 applications that she determines to be best. Norma still owes $189,000 on the farm.  So, she is asking for a $300 fee to submit your essay and application.  Her goal is 600 applications, which would give her $180,000.  She would cover the remaining $9,000 balance herself if that is all the applications she receives.  If she receives many more applications than that she will give up to $50,000 to the new owners as operating capital. She is doing this as a gift and not a contest with the specific purpose of keeping the new owners from having a tax burden when receiving the farm.  She has an attorney on her selection committee as well as a conservationist and agricultural professional.  She has done her homework to do this right. I have never heard of this happening before and cannot imagine the opportunity for a couple who otherwise might not be able to farm. Listen to the episode and go to the links below for more information.  But hurry, the deadline to submit an application is August 1st of 2017.
