SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
Every now and then I like to do a solo episode and kind of refresh everyone on what we are trying to do here on this show. We started the Off-Farm Income Podcast all the way back in 2014. This coming December will be four years of profiling agricultural entrepreneurs, and I cannot believe it has gone by so fast already. This is our 423rd episode, and that is unbelievable to me.
I work very good in a system. Meaning, once I get a good, replicable system set up I become really efficient at working that system. That is a good thing if you are looking for efficiency, but it can also be a bad thing if you are looking for creativity.
So, every now and then I need to take a week off from the interviews and just talk with you about what this is all about. I find the best way to really do that is to talk about my story and give you an update on where I am at. I think sometimes that I forget that in addition to being the host of this show, I am also one of the types of agricultural entrepreneurs that we profile here and this show has become my form of off-farm income.
Really, there are three points that I want to drive home today:
First, whatever life you are currently dreaming about having, whether that is being able to farm or having the economic freedom to stay on your farm during the week, it is possible.
Second, it does not matter how much you read or how many podcasts you listen to, you will never be able to envision all of the possible opportunities that will open up to you once you begin this journey.
Last, you need to start. As I think back on all the books, podcasts, websites and everything the else that I consumed while I was dreaming about the life I have now the one book that really stands out is actually titled “Start.: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average, and Do Work That Matters". It is written by John Acuff, and the concept is pretty simple - you have to start.
This Is Possible
Let me start off by talking about the fact that this is possible. Now, there was a time when I thought this was impossible. I can remember when we still lived in the city and my only real dream was just having the lifestyle of an entrepreneur. I just wanted my days to be my own. I wanted to wake up and be in charge of how my day went and not answer to an arbitrary schedule set by a supervisor.
I still had a dream of having a farm and living rurally. But during the time I am describing right now that still seemed like it was far off in the future, and for the moment I just wanted more freedom in my life.
Autumm and I had set up an office for me in one of the bedrooms of our house. This is how serious I was about this. From a previous business, Autumm’s dad had some office equipment in a storage shed in Buhl, Idaho about 140 miles to our south. We drove all the way down there with a utility trailer to get a nice desk and desk chair.
I brought this desk back and set it up right in front of the window of this bedroom so that sitting at my desk I could look out at the little ravine we lived in and see deer walking by and the beautiful view from our place. I just wanted my days to be spent here with the freedom to be able come and go as I pleased.
I knew that this was a vision I shared with a lot of people because there were a million “work from home” scams back then. And scammers don’t prey on the marginal interests of people. They prey on the deepest desires of people because this is the only way that they can get them to make poor buying decisions. I got lucky and never fell for one of those back then, but I was tempted.
The sad part of this story is that I had the desire, I had the office and I had the vision. But, I did not have the business idea. I just could not figure out what I could do or how I could transfer my police officer skills into a business and create this life. And, I finally started to think that the lifestyle I was dreaming about ... |
