SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
I have really liked the idea of a farm sitting business for a long time. For a person who likes to work with livestock and other animals but does not have their own this is a perfect way to get to do this. After my interview with Barbara Link about her business, All Creatures Pet Sitting, it became apparent to me that you need to also be a pet sitter to do this business. Of course people raising livestock will have pets as well. They are animal lovers.
Barbara gives us great advice in this episode. She talks about how to find customers and how to build trust with them. She also talks about different certifications to seek in order to make yourself stand out and to demonstrate how serious you are about this business.
If pet and/or farm sitting is a business that you have thought of, this episode is for you!
ADVICE FROM BARBARA:
SELF-DIRECTED: You need to do things right because that is how you do things. If you only perform at a high level with somebody watching over you, this is not the business choice for you.
ORGANIZED: Barbara has a lot of different animals on different farms with different needs to take care of. Organization is the key for her here.
PERSONABLE: Your potential customers will be trusting you with not just valuable property but animals that they care about. They will not give you this trust if they do not like you.
CERTIFICATION: Join a professional pet sitting organization. In addition to boosting your credibility this will give you opportunities for networking and business advice.
BONDED: Consider becoming both bonded and insured. This shows your professionalism for a small cost and helps to put customers at ease.
PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS BARBARA SUCCEED:
COMMUNICATION: Barbara is a talker, and this helps her develop trust and rapport with potential customers. These first two steps of the sales process are crucial to getting business.
YOUR ANIMALS: Barbara treats her customers' animals like they were her own.
