Description: SHOW NOTES INTRODUCING ELI SMALLWOOD! If you were to ask me to identify one characteristic of FFA students that stands out at the most impressive to me I would have to say critical thinking.  I am always amazed at the decision making ability of the students that I get to interview on this show. Today's guest, Eli Smallwood, is a perfect example of this.  As he was building his beef business in high school he was looking for a way to stand out.  He was confident enough to try his own thing and make his own decisions.  This is what led him to start his own herd of Shorthorn cattle.  This was not a well known or common breed in his area of Georgia, and he thought that raising this breed would be a great niche for developing his business. He was correct and has built a reputation and now wells Shorthorn cattle in his region of Georgia and beyond.  It was this independent decision making and critical thinking that led him to be Georgia's "state star farmer" and to take second in in state proficiency awards. Eli is also very interested in judging livestock, and he wanted to get some new perspective on how it is done.  This led him to research colleges and find one with a judging program that he thought would suit him well.  It also led him all the way to Warner, Oklahoma where he is now studying animal science and developing himself as a livestock judge. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: "Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive."
