SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
So, a question I have been dealing with lately seems to be the opposite of the classic "chicken or the egg" question. That question is, "can a farmer ever really go on vacation or if you go on vacation are you really a farmer"? Which is true, or is there an answer?
The reason I have been asking myself this question is the big vacation that Autumm, Hattie and I are on right now. We have never done a trip like this before, but today as this episode is released we are visiting Germany and other parts of Europe.
This has been a long term goal of mine to see the parts of Europe that my ancestors came from. Also, to see many of the World War II sites that I have read about or seen in movies like "Band Of Brothers". So, we are making it all happen, and I don't regret living this part of our life in addition to the farming part. But the questions remains - do those who really make it as farmers take time out for trips like this.
While we are away we have a farm sitter watching our place, feeding our cattle and pigs and making sure everyone has water. I did my best to coordinate irrigation and hay cutting to fit into this vacation. But at the end of it all, I am not there. And to be a steward of the land and animals you need to be on that land and with those animals. So, we will see what things look like when we get back and how much, if any, of a set back on this farming season that this vacation costs us.
In mean time we will explore Germany and Europe, and I will pay particularly close attention to the agriculture that I see at I will do an episode from Europe to update you on all of this on 6/15/18. Guten Tag everyone!
