SHOW NOTES
In today's bonus episode we are going to re-visit the business of killing mosquitos and helping people to be comfortable at their own homes. I see a lot of crossover between this business and the types of certifications and knowledge that we already have in agriculture. This business probably will not work in every part of the U.S., but I suspect that it will work in more places than you might think.
Here are the show notes from the original episode with Dane Reiter.
KEY IDEAS:
Dane has a great story. He walked onto the baseball team at the University of Southern Mississippi and made the team! After playing baseball in college he went on to get his MBA. Now, he and his partner have started Mosquito Defense Solutions in Southern Mississippi. Does this seem like a person who goes after what he wants? You bet!
I was excited to bring you this episode. So many times the skills we develop on the farm can translate into services to provide people in the city. This business seemed to fit that mold. Many farmers get their applicators licenses to spray for weeds and bugs on their farms. This can translate to a business, serving those who do not have the same training and education. While we do not use this service in Idaho, in your more humid states this seems like a natural fit.
ADVICE FROM DANE REITER:
MAKE THE LEAP - Dane suggests taking a leap of faith if you have an interest in starting your own business. There just is no way to answer all of your questions or even know what to ask if you don't "get in the game" and mix it up. If you want to do it, find a way to do it.
BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT DANE REITER HAS RECEIVED:
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF - So often in business your friends and family are not going to believe in you. They are not being mean. They believe they are being compassionate. They do not believe they could do it themselves, so they are naturally concerned about you. You are going to have to believe in yourself.
DO THE WORK - It is going to be hard work. Get in there, get your hands dirty and get to work!
PERSONAL HABIT THAT ADS TO DANE REITERS' SUCCESS:
PLAN YOUR DAY - Dane says the one thing is adamant about is planning his day. Making sure that he knows what has be done and getting it done is key.
SET GOALS - A great definition of success is that it is the "realization of a worthy goal." If you do not set any goals, you will never achieve any. So figure out what it is you want and decided to achieve it.
