INTRODUCING OLIVER FOSS!
Every now and then when I interview an FFA student I get really jealous. Sometimes there is something that a student is able to do for their job or their business, or they are growing up in a place so different from anything that I have ever known that wish I could have done the same. Today’s episode is definitely one of those.
Oliver Foss grew up in New Hampshire. A state, that until I did this interview, I did not even realize had a coast line. Well, it turns out that New Hampshire does have a coastline, and it just happens to be the shortest one in the United States at just 45 miles.
This small coastline did not stop Oliver Foss from exploring the North Atlantic Ocean however. Since his sophomore year of high school, Oliver has been working on boats. He started out on charter boats doing whale watching tours and other tourist activities. However, he soon graduated to commercial fishing, going 70 miles out into the Atlantic and “hand jigging” for halibut, cod, and many other species of fish.
Just visualizing this, I am almost ready to pack up and move to Exeter, New Hampshire and be Oliver’s intern. However, I don’t know if I would ever stop being sea sick.
Oliver has quite a story and quite a different FFA experience than the students that I normally interview. All of this led him to be a state proficiency winner in the category of wildlife. I hope you enjoy it!

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.
REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:
- Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
- Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
- Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
“The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue
