SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
The world is full of uncertainty right now, and that certainly exists in agriculture as well. Those of us making our living in agriculture appear to be fortunate as the coronavirus lockdown continues. Our sector is not one that works in close proximity through much of the supply chain. And, we are absolutely essential. However, even with those factors in place, we are not immune.
Then there is the other end of the supply chain of agriculture that does require people working in close proximity: packing houses, canneries, creameries, etc. What happens if/when those places are forced to shut down. At the far end of the supply chain, restaurants have already shut down or severely altered how they are doing business.
On top of all of this, people throughout the country have filled their freezers with meat. This includes people who have never done this before. So, while this caused a momentary spike in the price of meat, it can also lead to a lag in meat purchases as we come out of this crisis.
All of these factors are going to impact agriculture for sure, and they are too complex for me to answer. So, in today’s episode I have an expert on the show. John Nalivka, the owner of Sterling Marketing, Inc. will join me on the show. He forecasts beef and pork prices for restaurants and other stakeholders in the industry. And, he forecasts 20 months out into the future. He will answer a lot of these questions, as best as anyone can right now.
