SHOW NOTES
INTRODUCING DAKOTA GRUMBINE!
Today we have a story of a young man who is striving for excellence in his pork enterprise. It is this type of outlook and motivation that is allowing him to succeed.
Dakota Grumbine is the 2020 Pennsylvania State Star in Agribusiness. They have their mid-winter convention and January, so he has already received this award. What Dakota has done is replicable by anyone on any property of 3-5 acres. He has come up with a system of raising pigs in a manner that is requested by people and restaurants in his community. He also had specialized in Berkshire pork so that he can tout all of the positive sides of the flavor in that style of pork.
Dakota’s business got its start while having dinner in a restaurant with his father one night. He knew that this restaurant bought local food, and he had heard that they were in need of a pork producer. While they were there he asked if the owner was on site, and he was. They struck up a conversation, and a business relationship was developed.
Since that time between Dakota’s efforts and the word of mouth coming from the owner of that restaurant, he has built “Grumbine’s Berkshires”. He has a great website but says that he wants to improve upon it going forward. He has a lot of plans for this business and his future, and he definitely lays out a roadmap for anyone who loves pigs and would like to start a good livestock business.

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.
REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:
- Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
- Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
- Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
“The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue
