SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

For many people they have a dream of farming but they are living and working in the city at a good paying job.  Or, they have a spouse working in the city who does not want to move, and they need to come up with a creative way to satisfy this desire.

Enter, Chris Grallert, president of Green City Growers who has done just this.  Green City Growers is a company that employs several people, farming all around the metropolitan area of Boston, Massachusetts.  They have developed clients all throughout the region that want green spaces, relaxing environments for employees, roof top gardens and food production on site.

Green City Growers facilitates the construction and beginning of these projects.  And, they provide weekly maintenance and upkeep of the gardens.  This way the employees can enjoy gardening on their own terms, but the the upkeep of the garden does not become an added stressor to their already stressful careers.

Most notable of Green City Growers’ projects is Fenway Farms.  This is a large, rooftop garden located inside Fenway Park.  I have seen it with my own eyes, and it is impressive.  As you walk around the park you can look down and see the food production that is going on right there, in that historic ballpark.

ADVICE FROM CHRIS:

HEADACHES: If you are going to establish this business, make sure you are providing all materials and services for your clients as well as maintenance.  You do not want to create new headaches for your clients.  If a green space or urban garden is one more burden they have to deal with, they are likely to say “no”.

SIMPLE: Keep the business model simple and focused on what you do best.

ADVICE: Make sure you are always open to taking advice from others who have been there before you.
