On Christmas Eve in 1979 my mom lit some candles and put them on our coffee table next to a fake Christmas decoration made of plastic. None of us remembered to blow out the candles before we went to bed. By about 4am my mom woke up because something was irritating her nose. She smelled something and went out to the living room to check things out. It was then that she discovered that the house was on fire.
In the pictures below you can see where our Christmas tree was and the fireplace in the background. The fire started on the coffee table which is out of view but between the Christmas tree and fireplace. You can just see a candle above one of the greeting cards on the bricks. That is sitting on the center of the coffee table. After 1979 we had candles for decoration but they were never lit.
In the picture of me on my bike you get a good view of the alley with the fire house at the far end. I am riding my bike right be between my house and the Rinna’s house.

What took place next was a hurricane of chaos that included the blankets getting ripped off of my bed, my dad throwing water on the fire with our trash bucket and our neighbor, Fred, running out of his house wondering where the fire was.
The time the sun came up on Christmas morning most of our small community was at our house. The fire had been put out, and beers were being passed around. It was “It’s A Wonderful Life”, Valley Home style. You’d have to have grown up here to understand, but in today’s episode I am going to try and share this with you.
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and can carry it with you well into 2020.
