SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
As prospective farmers and ranchers, you are seeking to be involved in one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. And, if you are already engaged in this pursuit, then you are already exposed. The fact that farming involves risk, and requires skill to remain safe is one of the things that I like about it. I like the fact that you need to think and that you cannot be protected by a shell of bubble wrap while you are working. This is what makes it special – not everyone can do this.
With that said, I also believe in mitigating risks and remaining as safe as possible. Farming and ranching is an unbelievably rewarding profession, and we don’t want to mar that experience with tragedy, financial devastation or a loss of the lifestyle due to an accident or illness.
Even when we do mitigate the risks that are associated with farming and ranching, it does not eliminate potential injury or even death. And if one of those moments were arrive on your farm, you would be calling for help, most likely from your neighbors on the volunteer fire department.
You know your farm. They do not. So, when something is going wrong and they are coming to help they could be walking into dangers that they do not know exist. This could be anything from trying to bring a heavy truck over a bridge that cannot support the load to entering a building with dangerous gases present inside that are unknown to the first responders.
Today I get to speak with Casper Bendixsen, the director of the National Farm Medicine Center. He is going to talk a lot about RF-DASH or Rural Firefighters Delivering Agricultural Safety And Health. This is all about having first responders in rural communities train farmers about occupational safety. Casper will also be discussing some of the statistics and risks associated with farming and how people like him are working to mitigate these risks for the benefit of everyone in agriculture.
