KEY IDEAS: 

Today I get to do one of my favorite things.  I will be interviewing one of the parents of a student who I featured on the show.  I will be speaking with Kristen Andersen.  She is the mother of Kiley Andersen who will actually be featured on the show in episode #709.  I really enjoy it when I interview an FFA student and find out that their parents are demonstrating entrepreneurship to them.

Kristen and her husband started Leading Edge Supplements and Supplies in their garage about three years ago.  This was in response to a shortage of quality feed and supplies in their area for show animals. They started driving all the way down to Modesto, California to pick up supplies, brining them back up their home town about an hour north of San Francisco and selling them to folks in their area.

This has grown very rapidly, and now they take trailers to different shows around the west and sell products.  They have also purchased the rights to the product, Shag Swag, and they selling that all over the United States through the mail and through some distributors in Texas and Oklahoma.

Kristen and her husband are happy in their primary professions.  They started this business out of pure need and frustration.  Kiley was having difficulty getting what she needed for her show animals, and finally Kristen just decided it would be easier to start a business to facilitate this.  It has grown over time to the point that pallets of product are now being delivered to them, and they are serving exhibitors well out of their local area.  It is a great story.

ADVICE FROM KRISTEN:

FIRST: Always put your customer’s needs and desires first

GENERATE:  Generate word of mounty by being excellent

INVEST: Invest back into your business, especially in things that will make you more efficient or profitable.

BEST ADVICE KRISTEN HAS RECEIVED:

Customers come first.  Kristen is passionate about serving her customers, and that is the key to their success.

PERSONAL HABIT:

Kristen is avid about record keeping, and this has made all the difference when it comes to running an international business outside of her full time job.
