SHOW NOTES
INTRODUCING THOMAS KINDER!
What would it be like to be in high school and have a feedlot given to you? Today’s guest found that out when he was in high school and his grandparents gifted a portion of their Colorado feedlot to him, his sister, his brother and his cousins.
Thomas Kinder and his grandparents live in the area of Tuttle, Idaho. And his grandparents have a feedlot for starter calves there. They also have a feedlot in Sterling, Colorado for finishing out beeves, and this is the one that they gave a portion of to all of their grandchildren.
Thomas has been out to the feedlot in Colorado once, but he spends a lot of time working on the starter feedlot in Tuttle. He also spends a lot of time working on the books for the Colorado feedlot with his grandmother. So, he is getting the practical, pen riding and feeding experience he needs in Idaho and learning the business and book keeping side at his grandma’s kitchen table.
This has served Thomas well as he won a beef proficiency award for the State Of Idaho. He has also been inspired to seek both his bachelor and master’s degrees in agricultural education. He starts at the College of Southern Idaho this fall and then is planning on moving on to Montana State University after two years. At this point he plans on getting both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and becoming an ag teacher……and of course a feedlot owner and farmer!

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.
REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:
- Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
- Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
- Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
“Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive.”
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
