 SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

Today we get to profile a farm sitting business.  This is a business idea that I really like and have always liked for people who want to work with livestock but do not have a farm of their own.  It is also a great example of a business in which somebody has the skill to farm (taking care of their own livestock), and they can use that skill off of the farm (taking care of other people’s livestock) to create their off-farm income.

Our guest today, Lauren Dixon, provided some much needed insight into this idea.  She cautions against starting this business until you are well versed in taking care of the animals that will be at the property.  There is potential liability with this business, and if you misrepresent your experience or skills that could be a problem.

Lauren has great advice for us in this episode, including how to deal with liability as well as how to go about creating a good farm sitting contract.

ADVICE FROM LAUREN:

UNDERSTAND: Understand how your state’s laws apply to you regarding liability with other people’s livestock.  You really should research your state’s laws to have the best understanding of this possible.

CONTRACT: You need to have a good farm sitting contract.  Lauren will tell you how she developed her contract.

SLOW: Don’t quit your day job just yet.  Start slow, experiment and make sure there is a market for your business idea.

BEST ADVICE THAT LAUREN HAS RECEIVED:

Before you leave your full-time job, start on the side.  Put 30 minutes into your business idea, every day, and let those days build up.  Pretty soon you will have a thriving business going.

PERSONAL HABIT:

Work Ethic – Lauren credits her childhood on a ranch with developing her work ethic.  Her ability to work hard and work everyday helps her to succeed.

RESOURCE RECOMMENDATION:

Lauren recommends getting around and speaking with as many other entrepreneurs as you can.
